On August 1, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a church parking lot at the intersection of Jefferson Dr. and Overhill Dr. in Lake Charles regarding a report of a suspicious vehicle.
The caller advised they witnessed a man, later identified as James E. Owen, 47, 424 Broussard Lane, Lake Charles, steal a utility trailer from the parking lot and drive away at a high rate of speed pulling the trailer.
After receiving a detailed description, including the license plate number of the SUV in which Owen fled, deputies were able to quickly locate Owen and the stolen trailer at his home.
Owen was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with illegal possession of stolen things $500-$1500; theft over $500; and criminal trespassing.
Judge David Ritchie set his bond at $22,500.
The stolen utility trailer was recovered by deputies and returned to the victim who had parked the trailer in the church parking lot.
CPSO Sr. Cpl. Bryan Guth and Deputy Shannon Brown were the arresting deputies.
