On August 27, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched after receiving a complaint from a victim regarding several personal checks that had been stolen.
During the investigation deputies learned on August 23, Briggitte R. Reed, 50, and Nikki J. Reed, 36, both of 1620 5thStreet, Lake Charles, met with the victim at her office to transact some business. The victim advised deputies she left her office momentarily to retrieve paperwork, leaving her purse in her office.
After Briggitte and Nikki left her office, the victim discovered over $150 of cash was missing from her purse. Once the victim realized the cash was missing, she contacted her bank and discovered over $500 worth of her checks had been stolen and forged, two of which were cashed at a local store and four other checks were used to make purchases at a local restaurant.
During further investigation, CPSO detectives reviewed surveillance video from the local store which captured Briggitte and Nikki cashing the forged checks. Surveillance video at the local store also captured Briggitte attempting to cash another forged check but was refused by the store management.
On September 9 both Briggitte and Nikki Reed were arrested and booked in the Calcasieu Correctional Center and both charged with 7 counts of forgery; and 1 count of theft under $500.
Judge Clayton Davis set both of their bonds at $4,500 each.
CPSO Detective James Leubner is the lead investigator in this case.
