On September 24, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched in reference to a burglary in progress at a home on Powell Lane in Lake Charles.
Upon arrival, deputies were advised a man, later identified as Joshua D. Smith, 18, 1428 Sunset Drive, Lake Charles, attempted to disarm the home’s alarm system by pulling the phone lines out of the utility box, tried to break in through a carport door and fled the scene on a bicycle before deputies arrived.
Approximately one hour later, deputies patrolling the area of McNeese Street and McVay Street in Lake Charles located Smith and when they attempted to stop him, he jumped off of his bicycle and fled on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, Smith was apprehended by deputies without incident.
During the investigation, deputies recovered a black bag with Smith’s bicycle which contained an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry.
When questioned by deputies, Smith confirmed he attempted to burglarize the home on Powell Lane and also confirmed he burglarized a home on Contour Street a few hours earlier.
Smith was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with 2 counts of simple burglary; 2 counts of criminal damage to property under $500; theft over $1,500; criminal trespass; and flight from an officer.
His bond is still pending.
CPSO Deputies Bryan Alexander, Matthew Saxby, Terry Faulk and Cpl. Travis Mier were the arresting deputies on this case.
